How to calculate BMI?

  • BMI = Weight(kg) / [Height(meter)] ²
  • BMI = 703 x Weight(lbs) / [Height(inch)] ²

What is Body Mass Index?

The body mass index (BMI) formerly called the Quetelet index, is a measure that uses a person’s height and weight to evaluate if his or her weight is healthy.

Who shouldn’t use a Body Mass Index calculator

BMI should not be used by bodybuilders, athletes, pregnant women, elderly people, or young children. This is because BMI does not take into account whether the weight is carried as muscle or fat, just the number.

Those with a higher muscle mass, such as athletes, may have a high body mass index but not be at greater health risk. Those with a lower muscle mass, such as children who have not completed their growth or the elderly who may be losing some muscle mass may have a lower BMI.

During pregnancy and lactation, a woman’s body composition changes, so using BMI is not appropriate.

Why is it important for seafarers?

Overweight and obesity are very important issues for seafarers mainly because these conditions are associated with other problems such as cerebrovascular and coronary diseases and several other causes of death. Obesity and metabolic syndrome are associated with lower cognitive performance.

Obesity is recognized as a cause of physical inability among seafarers. In addition to the influence on health, being overweight may represent a safety issue onboard ships.

For example, performing certain emergency operations may be difficult for overweight people, such as taking emergency exits, climbing on a ladder, or climbing on a rescue boat. Due to this, fatal accidents are more common in the shipping industry. 

For seafarers, the ship is not only the working place but a real living environment for quite a long period. Many factors such as irresponsible eating habits, exposure to chemical substances, smoking, and alcohol consumption increase the chances of getting obese & thereby increase the risk of developing tumors and cardiovascular diseases.

Hence seafarers should always be fit to work on ships & be able to face the most dangerous situations at sea. It goes without saying that, Body Mass Index and age are closely associated with workability for any individual.

A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. BMI applies to most adults 18-65 years.

Like any other measure, body mass index is not perfect because it is only dependent on height and weight and it does not take into consideration different levels of adiposity based on age, physical activity levels, and sex. Due to this reason, it is expected that it overestimates adiposity in some cases and underestimates it in others. Other measures, such as waist circumference (WC), can complement BMI estimates.

Measuring waist circumference helps screen for possible health risks that come with overweight and obesity. If most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips, you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

This risk goes up with a waist size that is greater than 35 inches for women or greater than 40 inches for men. To correctly measure your waist, stand and place a tape measure around your middle, just above your hipbones. Measure your waist just after you breathe out.

 

What can be done to be within the normal range?

Each and every organization employing seafarers should campaign for promoting awareness among the seafarers regarding the danger of these conditions(overweight and obesity).

Regular BMI checks to be carried onboard the vessels so that seafarers serving at sea can take measures to control their diets & avoid consumption of alcohol, and junk food, and indulge in additional physical exercise or yoga sessions.
